In mid-June, central Wisconsin will trans- form into a renewable energy and sustain- ability powerhouse as 20,000 people head to the Midwest Renewable Energy Association’s Energy Fair and about 400 industry professionals attend the Small Wind Conference.

The Energy Fair — held June 17–19 in Custer, Wis. — began as a grass-roots education event for solar enthusiasts. Twenty-two years later, the event maintains the same fun, grass roots atmosphere, even with 400-plus workshops and exhibits. The focus of the Energy Fair also has broadened through the years. In honor of “local food Friday,” urban farmer Will Allen will serve as the keynote speaker.

Allen is the founder of Growing Power, a nonprofit organization that allows people of diverse backgrounds to participate in a community food system, and he was named one of Time magazine’s most influential people of 2010.

A few days beforehand, in nearby Steven’s Point, Wis., keynote speaker Randy Udall will kick off the Small Wind Conference, held June 14–15. Udall is the former director of the Community Office for Resource Efficiency in western Colorado.
