Chris McWhinney, president of Dayton-based Millennium Reign Energy (residential
hydrogenpower.com), has developed a line of
hydrolysis machines that can utilize solar or wind
power to generate hydrogen. Applications for
these generators range from home and commercial use to smaller teaching units already
in place at many high schools and universities.
Plans include service stations to fuel hydrogen-powered cars.
Algaeventure ( algaevs.com), headquartered
in Marysville, creates biofuels from algae and
has developed a unique harvesting and drying
system that minimize costs and energy requirements.
Amp Electric Vehicles (ampelectricvehicles.
com) in Blue Ash converts vehicles like the
Chevy Equinox to pure electric drive. Minster
Wind ( minster.com/wind/wind.html), in Minster, supplies casting and machining for a multi-megawatt turbine manufacturer and hopes to
market its own turbines in the future.
Perrysburg is home to First Solar, the largest thin-film manufacturer in the United States.
Xunlight ( xunlight.com) in Toledo utilizes a
high-speed roll-to-roll process to manufacture
flexible thin-film panels.
Ohio is working hard to provide the right
combination of incentives and tools to make
the renewable energy industry sustainable. Ohio
has a skilled workforce and many underutilized
manufacturing facilities ready to go to work in
the new green economy.

green energy ohio turns 10
Green Energy Ohio (GEO; greenenergyohio.
org), the state’s American Solar Energy Society
chapter, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.
Through the hard work of Executive Director Bill
Spratley and his staff, GEO has spread the word
about the benefits of renewable energy throughout Ohio. Their work touches every segment of
the state, including government, schools, industry and other nonprofits. The 2009 Ohio Solar
Tour was a great success, and many communities are already planning for the 2010 tour.
Other nonprofits are making a big difference.
One example is the Greater Cincinnati Energy
Alliance ( greatercea.org). Started by Andy
Holzhauser, the alliance is dedicated to helping
Cincinnati communities reduce energy costs,
educate the public and create jobs.
There have been false starts in renewable
energy before. Not this time. This is real. And
Ohio is leading the way. ST
