Awards for each of the 10 performance categories were handed out during the week, with
overall victors crowned on June 27. Congratulations to the Lumenhaus team from Virginia Tech
University for earning first place overall and to
the University of Applied Sciences/Rosenheim
and Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences
(both in Germany) for their second and third
place finishes. We were incredibly proud to earn
eighth place and especially to win the web-based
vote for the Public Choice Award.

Dead at 97
art linkletter died may 26 at his
home in Bel air, calif. he was 97.
We celebrated the results at an incredible final
party hosted by the Solar Decathlon organization. The party was a giant, collective exhale. It
was the most amazing display of international
camaraderie I have ever experienced. Students
from around the world traded team jerseys and
polos. We danced all night and drank deeply of
the incredible experience we had all endured
together. In spite of the stress and exhaustion,
if offered the opportunity, I’d do it all again. All
two years of it.
Best known as a popular radio
and television host, linkletter was
also an early investor and chairman of solargenix ( solargenix.com),
manufacturer and developer of
concentrating solar technologies for
utility and architectural applications.
he was a featured speaker at five of
the american solar energy society's
national solar conferences and was
inducted into the environmental hall
of fame in 2008.

linkletter was born in moosejaw,
saskatchewan, and raised in san
diego. after an adventurous adolescence — he rode the rails and
saw the world as a merchant seaman — he attended san diego
state teachers college and, in 1934,
landed a job as an announcer at
kgB. his programs “house Party” (on
cBs) and “People are funny” (nBc)
ran on radio and t V, in overlapping
contracts, from 1942 to 1969. later
he produced the program “kids say
the darndest things,” hosted by Bill
cosby. he served as an advisor to
five u.s. presidents and as ambassador to australia in the reagan
administration.
linkletter was, “simply the
most savvy entrepreneurial business
leader, with the highest standards
for ethics and integrity, that i have
ever met or dealt with,” said John
myles, ceo of solargenix energy
and chairman of the ases Board of
trustees. “art spent his entire life
working to make the united states,
the world and humanity itself better.”
