Colorado Community-Based Solar Hits the Market

Paul Spencer of the Clean Energy Collective (CEC) is aiming to push commu-
nity-based solar to a new level in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley. Ratepayers at
the local utility, Holy Cross Energy, now have the option of buying sections of
panels at two different CEC solar farms, and another three are in the works. Using
a virtual net-metering system, the electricity generated by the panels is automati-
cally deducted from investors’ bills. The company’s claim: A $725 check, the cost
of one panel, will return $7,000 in savings in 50 years.
