Brunton SolarFlat
Brunton manufactures a wide variety of camping
gear, compasses, instruments, binoculars and scopes,
including a full range of portable PV chargers and
power storage devices. Its most powerful PV panel
is the SolarFlat 15 ($195), a 10-pound ( 4.5-kg) amorphous silicon module pumping out a full amp at 15
volts. At 3 square feet (0.28 square meter), the unit
is designed to be mounted on a van roof and can
be connected in parallel in strings of five through

Solio Classic Charger
Solio’s Classic charger (about $100) looks like a fat
jack knife but unfolds, like a flower, to maximize
solar gain. The PV panels generate 0.9 watt, charging
up a 1.6-amp-hour lithium-ion battery in eight to 10
hours, but you can plug in an AC adapter for a four-hour recharge. The 5.6-oz (160-g) device will then
run or recharge almost any pocket-sized electronic
device. solio.com
Powerfilm R15-300
The 5-watt R15-300 (about $150) is the most portable of Powerfilm’s roll-up portable PV units (larger
versions are available up to 20 watts). Weighing
just 10 oz (284 g), the thin-film panel unrolls to 241
square inches (0.115 square meter), and puts out
15 volts, so it will recharge a 12-volt battery. These
devices are waterproof and are shipped with 15 feet
( 4 meters) of marine-grade tinned cable, so with
Powerfilm’s compact charge controller, they’re ideal
for maintaining the charge on marine batteries.
