Judith Love Cohen is a retired aerospace engineer who designed systems for the Hubble Space Telescope and the lunar lander. Since 1991, she’s been writing books — colorfully illustrated by her husband, David A. Katz — aimed mostly at elementary school girls. The stories encourage students to seek careers in science and engineering.

In recent years, Cohen and
coauthor Robyn C. Friend have
expanded their audience to
include boys and shifted their
focus to sustainability issues.
The new books, written for 9 to
12 year olds, include “A Clean
Sea: The Rachel Carson Story”;
“A Clean Sky: The Global Warm-
ing Story”; and “A Clean City: The
Green Construction Story.”
The latest in the series is “A Clean Planet: The Solar
Power Story” ( 41 pages, from Cascade Pass, cascadepass.
com). Using material contributed by Don Buchalski of Dow
Corning, Greg Bausch and Dave Pasek of Hemlock Semi-
conductor and silicon crystal expert Ethan Good, the team
has produced a clear and lively short course on the power
of the sun and its uses. Starting with an explanation of the
ways the sun drives weather and plant growth, the authors
explain that we often use solar power indirectly, by burning
wood, plants or fossil fuel. Then they explain ways we use
solar power directly.
