SMUD Hosts Second Youth Energy Summit
sMud
Hector ortiz of the sacramento Municipal Utility District (sMUD) teaches high
school students the benefits of energy-efficient building techniques at the second
annual Youth Energy summit, a two-day event hosted by sMUD in January.
The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD; smud.org) host- ed its second annual Youth Energy Summit (YES) training event
Jan. 22 and 23. YES drew nearly 100 high school juniors and seniors to
learn about a wide range of energy issues, including SMUD’s strategy to
reduce the region’s overall energy use. Cosponsors were Roseville Electric ( roseville.ca.us/electric) and the Lodi Electric Utility (lodielectric.
com), and the event was coordinated by Sacramento State’s LegiSchool
Project ( csus.edu/legischool).
Students left the event with the tools to become civic-minded energy
advocates. The summit featured experts in energy fields including Nobel
Prize-winning physicist Dr. Daniel Kammen and Chelsea Sexton, the
electric car activist featured in the documentary, “Who Killed the Electric Car?” Participants learned the basics of energy and climate science,
plus technology trends in solar and wind energy and energy efficiency.
Sessions focused on green jobs and energy-related legislation and policies.
The students will use their newly acquired knowledge to complete
energy-related service learning projects back home, to be documented
with a display at the state capitol on Earth Day. Each student receives
one transferrable college credit at no cost through state funding, and
members of the seven top project teams will earn scholarships.
The YES Leadership in Action program received the 2008 Sacramento Environmental Commission’s Environmental Recognition Award for
Achievement in Education/Outreach. ST
