Nominate an ASES Award Recipient
Each year, the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) honors people who have made outstanding contributions to the society or to the solar energy community. Nominations for 2010
awards are due Jan. 29.
The Charles Greeley Abbot Award is conferred to an individual who has made a significant
contribution to the field of solar energy or to ASES. The Passive Pioneer Award is presented to
a person (or group) whose creative and original thinking and research has led to new developments in the passive solar energy field. The Rebecca Vories Award honors a volunteer whose
efforts have significantly advanced the ability of ASES to accomplish its mission. The John
and Barbara Yellott Award recognizes an outstanding graduate student working in the solar
energy field and includes a $500 scholarship. The Hoyt Clarke Hottel Award goes to an individual who has made a significant contribution in any area of the solar energy field. Lastly, the
Women in Solar Energy Award recognizes the contributions of women in the solar field. A list
of previous recipients and nomination forms can be found at ases.org/awards. The winners will
be honored at SOLAR 2010, the ASES National Solar Conference, in Phoenix, May 17-22.
Solar Leader Will Be Missed
Anyone involved in solar energy within the last 50
years, especially in Colorado,
likely knew George Löf. A passionate advocate for solar, Löf
passed away on Oct. 12 at the
age of 95, but not before leaving
a significant legacy.
Löf built two of the nation’s
first solar residences, one of
which is still performing (see
Advances, page 16). As a professor at Colorado State University, he founded the school’s
