gy industry? need training? You’re in luck.
courses for entry-level solar installers have
been springing up all over the country.
“our enrollment has more than tripled in
the last six months,” said Rick gilbert, president of Solar Source institute (solarsource.
net), a continuing-education school for electricians and plumbers allied to a solar contractor
in Largo, Fla. Driving the boom is the expectation that federal stimulus funds for energy
upgrades to government buildings will reach
contractors this year, and they’ll need to be up
to speed. meanwhile, gilbert said, homeowners and businesses are taking advantage of the
new 30 percent federal tax credit for new solar
installations, leading local energy contractors
to look for new help.
The prospect of new jobs is the primary
cause of the increased demand for training,
said Dominic Shambra, assistant principal
at the East Los Angeles Skills center (elasc.
adultinstruction.org), an adult-education program of the Los Angeles unified School District. The center has a waiting list to enroll in
solar installation courses. “Solar energy is one
of the major emerging industries,” Shambra
said. “People are out of work, and this seems
to be the next wave of future careers.”
Demand for solar installation training is
high. community colleges, the electrician’s
union, economic development agencies and
private vocational schools have jumped in to
