Berkeley Bowl West
PROJECT > Berkeley Bowl West, an extension of
the iconic supermarket in Berkeley, Calif., opened in
July with a 111-kilowatt photovoltaic system.
FEATURES > Sun Light & Power (
sunlightand-power.com) installed 636 Sharp 175 PV panels,
generating about 150,000 kilowatt-hours annually,
to offset about 9 percent of the lighting and refrigeration cost for the 140,000-square-foot store.
BENEFI TS > The system should save about 90 tons
of greenhouse gas emissions.
Employing approximately 150 people, the new
building’s open floor plan gives it an interesting
warehouse-like feel and includes a small wine tasting bar, a prep kitchen, the Community Center café,
a warehouse and offices.
Berkeley Bowl ( berkeleybowl.com)has built
its reputation on its incredible selection of exotic
produce, including 25 bins of stone fruit. Nearly
a quarter of the fruits and vegetables comes from
organic farms. Founder Glenn Yasuda, 75, continues
to manage the produce section. ST
