Noble Homes, of West Somerville, Mass., makes eco-friendly kit homes. Each kit provides a complete custom-designed house shell using a bolt-together white pine post-and-truss structure, supporting light-steel framed wall and roof panels insulated with expanded polystyrene foam. The customer specifies the pre-cut roofing and siding finishes. Building from a kit reduces construction waste, and the homes can incorporate renewable energy strategies. Kits start at $45 per square foot; add the cost of a concrete slab foundation and interior work to achieve an estimated finished cost of $125 per square foot.
