aSeS awards Solar excellence
Eviduals for their outstanding achievements in solar and
renewable energy. The following award winners were
ach year, the American Solar Energy Society honors indi-
recognized at ASES’ National Solar Conference, SOLAR 2009,
held in May in Buffalo/Niagara, N. Y.
HAROLD R. HAY received the
Charles Greeley Abbot Award,
which recognizes individuals who
have made significant contributions to ASES or solar energy. Hay
qualifies on both counts. His work
on rooftop solar ponds is definitive
and known worldwide. His scientific publications have appeared
in top-rated engineering journals,
and he has lectured in European
universities, China and the Philippines. Recognizing the need for
both low-cost housing and clean
water early in his career, Hay has
several patents for his original
work on the heating and cooling
of buildings — the most recent at
94 years of age — and patents on
solar desalination.
A longtime ASES member, Hay
was the first to propose a “
committee” structure (now known
as divisions) to emphasize the
professional nature of the organization. He was instrumental in
forming the Ethics and Members’
Concern Committee. And in 1986,
he received the ASES Passive Pioneer Award.
BARUCH GIVONI accepted the
Passive Solar Pioneer Award,
which honors those whose pioneering work in the passive solar
energy field has set the stage for
others to follow. With the 1971
publication of Man, Climate and
Architecture, Givoni laid out the
scientific basis for passive building design. His two most recent
books, Passive Low Energy Cooling
of Buildings and Climate Considerations in Building and Urban
Design , are among the most thorough books available on climate
responsive building, urban design
and passive cooling.
Givoni has been a leader with
Passive and Low-Energy Architecture since its inception, contributing numerous insightful papers
and presentations and serving on
the group’s organizing committee. Givoni has also been influential while engaging students
as a professor at the University of
California – Los Angeles as well as
at Ben Gurion University and the
Technion in Israel.
AJEE T ROHA TGI, PH. D., received
the Hoyt Clarke Hottel Award,
which honors individuals who
have made a significant contribution to the technology in any area
of the solar energy field. Rohatgi
is the founder and director of
the solar research program at
the Georgia Institute of Technology. Widely recognized as one of
the top solar research centers in
the world, his program is a U.S.
Department of Energy University
Center for Excellence in Photovoltaic Research. He has authored
and co-authored more than 375
