Sky Trough Unveiled
The Sky Trough parabolic concentrator, by Col-orado-based SkyFuel, costs 35 percent less than
competing troughs, because it uses a proprietary
shatterproof Reflec Tech silvered-polymer film
in place of heavy glass. For structural integrity,
the polymer mirror is laminated to aluminum
sheets. The aluminum trough, with all supporting structure, is 30 percent lighter than an
equivalent glass trough, while offering roughly
twice the light-gathering surface area. A 375-foot
(115-meter), eight-module trough rated at 150
kilowatts fits on a single flatbed truck. SkyFuel
calculates that it can be installed for 26 percent
less per watt than a glass trough.
