Sanyo Bi-Facial Modules
Make an Awning
Greg Koss of Denver-based installer Adobe
Solar designed a new aluminum mounting
system to create this residential awning. It
comprises 48 190-watt Sanyo HIT bi-facial
photovoltaic modules, catching sun from
either side to provide 9. 12 k W. The mounting system is appropriate for car-ports and
other building-integrated applications.

Trina Cells to Power Round-
the-World Flight Attempt
Trina Solar has agreed to provide enough
photovoltaic cells — almost 300 — to cover 22
square meters on the wings and tail of an elec-tric-powered plane scheduled to attempt an
almost-around-the-world flight next summer.
The 2,200-lb Hy-Bird will use a hydrogen
fuel cell for cruise power (about 700 kilowatts, or 90 hp, is required for level flight).
About twice that power is needed for takeoff
and climb, to be provided by batteries
charged by the PV array. Hy-Bird is based on
the 600-kg ( 1,320-lb) Lisa Akoya (“pearl”),
which made its first flight last October at
Chambery/Aix in the French Alps, powered
by a 100-hp Rotax gasoline engine.
